About Slovenia
From the snow-capped peaks of the Julien Alps to the scattered beach towns along the Gulf of Trieste, Slovenia truly has something for everybody - and wine is no exception. Over 50 vine-varieties can be found growing throughout the country, roughly 75% of which is dedicated to white wines. It is no wonder that Slovenia boasts some of the world’s most refined wines—and some of the most unique. For any big spenders out there, you won’t want to miss out on Slovenia’s Refosk dessert wine, which is enhanced with white truffles and adorned with a diamond on its bottle. It has been sold with a price tag of €500,000— but if you forgo the diamond you can find it in most liquor stores for €25. Another wine to seek out is that of the elusive Teran grape, which grows only on the coast of Slovenia and in Istria, Croatia. Some studies have linked the consumption of Teran with maintaining a healthy heart and brain, so skip the spittoon during your tasting. Every year Slovenia is awarded numerous gold, silver and bronze medals during the Decanter World Wine Awards - one of the world’s most reputable wine evaluation events. In 2019 the event was held in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, a stunning city marked by its lush greenery and canal that flows through the town centre. Whether you choose to visit here, or one of Slovenia’s many other wine regions, you will have no shortage of beautiful landscape nor wine to drink.
